Graphics WELCOME! You have entered the "No B.S. Zone"
The seminar titled, Springboards for Inspiration – Sourcing & Recording Ideas, presented by Ben Nazario from MC2 stimulated attendees with ideas for where to find resources for their next booth design & graphics initiative. The seminar also covered how to create a process for collecting and organizing the ideas in an Inspiration File – “because great ideas are of no value if you can’t find them when you need them,” said Nazario!
Being a former Graphic Designer, this seminar content excited me and reminded me that I should ALWAYS have a camera with me to capture ideas for my inspiration file – you should do this as well!
So – what are a few of the sources for ideas that were discussed? · Be an attendee at a Trade Show: o Look at the booth designs, graphics & messaging on the show floor. If you are allowed to take pictures then snap away! o Think from a customer’s perspective about what they would likely remember from the different exhibits · Restaurants: o From small tiny little restaurants to the priciest posh restaurants there is inspiration all around you - from paintings, to lighting, to foliage, to flowers, to architecture and so on! · Museums: o A significant amount of money is spent on exhibits and graphics to attract the attention of visitors, many of these items can be applied to Trade Show exhibits · Retail o Malls, Department Stores, Furniture Stores and even Grocery Stores place information strategically to persuade you to buy certain products; next time you go shopping evaluate why items and/or signage is placed in a certain location and apply this to your next exhibit! · Everyday Experiences: o Inspiration is all around you from the moment you walk out your front door; keep an eye out for architecture, artwork, landscaping, etc. and as previously mentioned – always have your camera available! How do you organize your "Inspiration File" of information you have collected? You can either have an electronic file, or a paper based filing system OR BOTH! Back when I was in my Commercial Art class in High School we were instructed to look through magazines and take out ads and pictures that caught our attention, then from there we created paper based files ranging from animals, to people, to abstract items, to sports and so on. These files guided us through our art projects all year!
The same concept applies here; Nazario gave the advice to break the files into specific categories and file away electronically or paper based! We were also advised to find “buddies” that have inspiration files and share these items with each other! Great idea! When you are ready to start your next Booth Display design, or Graphic content, spend some time looking through your Inspiration File and see what jumps out at you and how you can apply it! Be sure to share these inspirational ideas with your design firm!
